DPXDC Prompt# 4- Are You Sure You’re Not Amazonian?
Diana has never been happier that the Louvre Museum decided to add a space exhibition because of her new coworker
Danny Nightingale was a bright-eyed 20-year-old who stood 5 inches taller than her and completed transitioning. They were too honest for her to doubt that statement but it just didn’t line up.
She had seen them catch a life-sized model rocket single-handedly before knocking it away from his guided group.
She casually slips Themyscarian into their conversations and they can keep communicating.
She confuses their sister for Artemis when she catches the two of them at a diner and their sister is even taller.
Danny has also been a great workout partner and when they tried sparring she could see the Themyscarian techniques built into them.
Danny had even shown her a photo of their dad and mom, and now she’s even more convinced. But she couldn’t believe that it came from their father’s side?!
She invited Artemis over to meet her enigma, and they both agree Danny has to be at least part Amazonian.
Danny loves his new job and his co-workers took them in immediately. They can’t help but tease Diana’s theory. Of course, he knows she’s Wonder Woman. Even if they retired and full-on ghost royalty, he still keeps up with the hero world. Hell, they’re even sure they’ve been an informant for Diana once or twice accidentally and a couple more times on purpose. It hasn’t been lost on them that Diana is slowly introducing more amazons. Like they’ve met Hippolyta over coffee?! WHAT?! There’s even occasionally a package of jewelry and books they recognize cause they’ve seen the stuff in Pandora’s lair!
Danny is at a loss for words with this situation. Maybe hanging out and training with Pandora had more of an effect than they realized. But how were they supposed to deny it when they knew Clockwork could be listening in at any moment? How awkward would that be? Explaining that the boogeyman Diana grew up hearing about was their grandpa too. Well, not actually but they can’t take that away from him. The ancient is just Grandpa-shaped dammit!
Danny joked one time about being an honorary amazon and didn’t realize that’s all it took for the two to take off running.
Cause what do you mean they suddenly has an Amazonian ancestor added to his family tree?! There’s no way Clockwork would change the timeline just to make them related. WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE DID?!
They can’t even wipe the vindication off Diana’s face when they admit they’re (now) one-sixteenth Amazonian.

Mom's Weekend and the Winter Soldier
Chapter 1
Pairing: James "Bucky" Barnes and Sarah Wilson
Summary: Sarah Wilson, Connie Caro and Avery Vance were the only three of Sarah's friends that were still here after the blip. They have a monthly girls day before having a kid free weekend. Normally Sarah has nothing to talk about...but not anymore.
Word Count: 2.2K
Rating: Mature
May
"So you are just going to sit here in my house and lie to me, Sarah Wilson?"
"I have not said one lie, Connie."
"Shall I remind you that omitting the truth is a lie." Avery says as she walks back into the living room hold another pitcher of Sangria.
"Start at the beginning.....I saw you two at the cookout. You looking all googly eyed at him. Where did you two disappear to? All three of the Wilson boys asked me if I saw you."
"They did? Sam is fine and needs to mind his own business. The boys just adore James...Bucky." You quickly say.
"And what about you? How do you feel about James....uh. I mean Bucky." Connie says mimicking your tone when she said James.
Avery pours you your third glass of Sangria.
"Ughhhh....fine..I hate you both."
3 Months ago:
"Why does he have to stay here? The boys and I are fine." You says to your annoying older/younger brother.
"Because....He has no friends. He lives all by himself in Brooklyn, can you imagine being white and living in Brooklyn?" Sam says as dramatically as he can.
"That's all who lives in Brooklyn! White hipsters in their leather coats and skinny jeans. He literally fits in."
Sam just gives the look.
"You can barely handle the look. Fine he can stay. But not on the couch, that's where I watch TV when the boys go to sleep. So either your room or you two clear out the guestroom."
"Not my room!" He pulls out his credit card and hands it over.
"Yes! Amazon here I come! Do you the be likes bold colors?"
"Girl, I don't know!"
Two days later thanks to Amazon you are putting together the second nightstand. That you got to match the bed frame.
You step back and admire you sense of style. You went with a BoHo Farmhouse look and tried to get it to 'flow' with the rest of the house. Now you just hope that this unusually attractive man with a vibranium arm will like it.
You turn to walk out and walk right into Bucky who was standing at the door.
You scream at the top of your lungs as he quickly retreats from your personal space.
"Shit! I'm so sorry."
"No, it's fine! I'm just super jumpy and you walk around like an assassin......oh my God! Sarah stop talking.........like a NINJA! That's what I meant....a bad choice of words! Or like a cat...."
"Sarah it's fine. I swear." He says putting a hand in your shoulder.
"Sorry, again. What do you think?" You say trying to change the subject.
"I mean you didn't have to do this...but I love it. Thank you."
He gives you that same smile he gave your when you first met him and he repeated your name.
"You are very welcome....I'm glad your staying here....they boys will love it."
He takes a small step towards you.
"Just the boys? No one else?"
Oh no....he's doing it again....damn....why can't you resist that damn smirk.
"Miss Josie....she definitely enjoys your shirtless runs."
"Just her?" He says stepping even closer.
"Okkkkkk fine Mr. Gerald. He just uses you to move heavy stuff."
"Nobody else?" Bucky says as he finally puts his hands around your waist.
"Nope. I can't think of anyone else who will love having you."
"You are so stubborn."
"I know."
He finally kisses you and walks you towards the bed. You sit down and scoot back towards tiny headboard.
"The bus will drop off the boys in 22 minutes." He says as he crawls towards you.
~~~
"WAIT A DAMN MINUTE. I said start at the beginning. This is like chapter 8. I know Sarah 'The Prude' Wilson has not invited a man into her secret garden." Avery shouts.
"First of all, fuck you. I'm not a prude I'm just selective on the dicks I invite in. And secondly, James is nothing but a gentleman.....sometimes."
"I can't believe you are having sex with a 106 year old white man."
"Ew.......when you say it like that...gross and we technically aren't having sex."
"Then what are you doing?" Connie says heading to the kitchen.
You and Avery follow ollow her into her kitchen.
"Stuff.....we are both very satisfied." You say trying not smile to big.
"Like.....you aren't teaching him anything new?"
"New? He's been having sex since before either one of us were born. Apparently he was quite the ladies man and he also lived in Wakanda." Connie says pouring another drink.
"Oooooooooooh yeah. I forgot about that. So you aren't like his first Brown skin girl." Avery sang that last part like Beyoncé's song.
"I would assume no, I'm not going to ask him that. I also don't care."
"Tell me about the first kiss?"
"Was it at the cookout?"
"Umm no...you remember when I got that call Karli?"
"Of course! I took your boys with me to my parents."
"I don't know how but he was sitting on my porch when I got home from dropping the boys off with you."
~~~
"What are you doing here? Didn't Sam tell you to leave." Bucky says with to much attitude for your liking
"No one is sending me out of my own home Bucky!" You shout as you walk past him into the house.
You didn't mean to yell at him but you were actually terrified.
You hear the door open but don't hear any footsteps.
"I'm sorry...it's been a long time since I've been worried about someone other than myself."
The impact of his words broke the last straw of your tears and you just wept.
"I'm right here." He says from behind you.
You turn and practically jump into his arms and cry into his left shoulder.
"I don't know what salt water will do to vibranium." You say sniffling.
"I don't know either. No one has ever cried on it before." He says chuckling.
You just stand there in the arms of a man you don't really know that well but you want to.
"I can carry you to the couch if you want."
"OK."
He turns you and bridal carries you to the couch. You look up at him and give him a watery smile.
"Not many people are attractive from this angle. But some how you manage it."
"Not many people are this beautiful with tears in their eyes, but some how you still take my breath away."
You lean up and put your hand on his cheek and kiss him. He immediately stops walking and pulls you closer to him.
The kiss is gentle at first but as he slides his tongue slowly into your mouth and caresses your tongue. He pulls back slowly and looks into your eyes.
"I'm so.."
"My bedroom is the 2nd door."
He just nods and continues upstairs, you made out for what seemed like hours until you fell asleep in his arms. He woke you up at 4am telling you he got a call from Sam and had to leave. He apologized for waking you up but didn’t want you to think he just left in the middle of the night.
~~~
"Well if that isn't the cutest shit, ever" Avery says.
"Where is he now?" Connie asks
You check your phone and smile at the text he sent you.
"He just got off the boat." You turn you phone to show them his text.
He used an emoji boat instead of the word.
Before you realize it Avery scrolls up on your text as sees the ones from last week.
"Woow....didn't know old men knew those words."
"You raggedy heffa." You say pulling your phone back.
"Ooooh what did he say."
"Nope! You two are terrible and I'm going to go home."
You head up Connie's back stairs and yell for the boys.
You, Connie and Avery were the only three of your friends that were still here after the blip.
Connie's oldest son Alex and husband Ethan were blipped but her other two weren't. Now Alex and Cass were the same age.
Avery's daughter was blipped but no one else.
You three became closer than ever you all knew not everyone else was this blessed.
When things returned to normal you all did mandatory weekends off of parenting. Each month one of you took everyone else's kids and did whatever you wanted. This weekend was Connie's turn with all the kids.
"Alright you two, behave! Have great weekend. I love you both. And both of you leave Bucky alone too."
When you head back down stairs Avery is saying goodbye to her kids.
They wave at you and run back upstairs.
"Are you sure you got everyone?" Avery asks.
"Yesssssss! Now git! Both of you."
Connie follows you both outside to your cars.
"Avery you and your wife have a wonderful weekend."
"And you Miss Prude let that White Wolf into your secret cave." Connie says as she walks back towards her house
"You bitches are THE absolute worst."
"Wait! I have one last question....what does that arm do?" Avery shouts as she gets in her car.
You just shake your head and get in your truck and pull out of Connie's driveway.
Connies house was on the other side of town but it still only took you 6 minutes to get home.
You pull up your long driveway as see him outside grilling.
This will be your first time actually alone in the house, without a time schedule. No work, no Sam and no boys.
He closes the lid to the grill and walks over to you as you park.
"Well, hello Mr. Barnes."
He smiles at your formal greeting.
"Hello to you Ms. Wilson. How was your afternoon?"
You give him a quick kiss.
"It was good. Connie and Avery say hi."
You say as you walk past him onto the front porch.
"Avery said just hi? I don't believe that for a second." He says laughing.
"Of course she didn't, but I'm not going to repeat it."
He walks up to you and slides his left hand over your ass and brings you closer.
"I'm doing dinner tonight. So you can just go inside and relax."
"Oh you are? Well excuse me then...I'm going to take a shower and put something very comfortable on."
You kiss his cheek and pull away from him but not before he smacks your butt as you walk away.
"Bucky!" You gasp.
He just laughs as try to hid like that smack wasn't crazy hot.
You head upstairs and start the shower and immediately group text Avery and Connie.
SW: Tonight's the night. He is making dinner. I'm inviting him into the garden.
AV: yes! Let him into your lady garden. Make sure you use protection or don't you could literally get pregnant with a super hero.
CC: can they actually have sex before you come up with super hero names? Enjoy yourself enjoy that fine specimen.... Listen he was even hot as the bad guy.
AV: OMFG he was....did you see some of those videos on the internet.....whew....the long hair.
SW: well thanks for that now I'm nervous. It's been a while since I have had sex. The other stuff was like riding a bike. Although I did forget how much work a bj is.
CC: they don't call a job for nothing.
AV: so you have been servicing the Winter Soldier.
SW: of course I have. I was raised right! He's ridiculously attractive and so sweet. You wouldn't think it but he is SUPER giving. If you catch my drift.
CC: I understand....
AV: I don't....give me all the details.
SW: use your imagination. Night ladies.
AV: night? It's 5:30pm
CC: leave her alone.
SW: don't make me mute this conversation.
AV: when are you going to talk about what that arm do.....
You muted the group chat after that text.
You would never mention that things that his vibranium arm does....never
You finish up with your shower and put in the strapless floral maxi dress that you bought for this special occasion and pin your twists over to one side
You head down the stairs to a wonderful aroma as you walk past the front door Bucky walks in from the back door, carrying a platter. He is wearing a black short sleeve button up and black skinny jeans. The button up has the top 3 buttons are unbuttoned.
"Wow...you look amazing." He says walking in.
"You too...I like the short sleeve."
He plates the food and you sit next to each other and eat and listen to him tell stories.
"Sorry, I've been talking all night."
"Oh my goodness. It's been amazing..I could listen to you talk for hours....."
"But...."
"There is something else I've been dying to do with you." You say fidgeting with your hands.
"There is.....oh......oooooh. Understood." He quickly gets up and clears the table then takes you by the hand and leads you to his bedroom.
@travismacintosh : “ even when you smile, your eyes are still sad. ”
It had been a few weeks since the cookout, the catalyst for Heather to realize that she was going to have to prove herself to more than just the kids and Travis. Maybe she had been blind to it before. Maybe these things had been happening all along. But it seemed like the cookout led to several following events that really tested her place in the Macintosh family.
It first started at the PTO meeting, ran by the wives that often stayed at home while their husbands worked - similar women to those who would glance her way and whisper as she picked Sarah up from the dance studio. Candice was one of these women, and Heather had recognized a few others from the cookout as well. She remained friendly and signed up to help on some committees for school events. She wasn’t here for catty women; she was here to show her support for Billy and Sarah.
The next one felt like three steps backwards for Billy - at least, towards her. The school counselor had called her during the day, relaying to her that some kids had found her Instagram and had started AirDropping pictures of her around the school. None of the pictures were inappropriate, but unfortunately, the comments that the teenage boys were making were not great and directed towards Billy. She had told Travis the night of the phone call, but she had given Billy some space to cool off. He wasn’t really talking to anyone, and she knew it’d be a while before he wanted to speak to her. She’d respect that space until he seemed ready.
She was already emotionally exhausted when the most recent one hit. In another attempt to try to prove herself to the women in their immediate surroundings, she answered the invitation on Next Door for a book club. She enjoyed reading, so why not? She had started reading the book they had chosen the night it arrived in an Amazon package on her doorstep, the image the book was projecting playing out and twisting around her mind. The book was about a man who lost his wife and ended up throwing his life away bouncing from pretty young floozy to another until he found his true happiness within himself. If she hadn’t been able to sleep already, she certainly wasn’t going to now. She glanced over at Travis, who was softly snoring as he slept on his stomach, arm draped over her lap while she read in her dim lamplight. They were both in their bathroom the next morning, her at the sink brushing her teeth as he stepped out of the shower. She had offered him a soft smile through the bathroom mirror, one that hadn’t made the full trip up to her eyes in a while. His comment afterwards proved that he knew it too.
“I’m trying my best,” she promised, the smile disappearing as quickly as it had come as she gave him a nod and put her toothbrush back in its holder. It was something she had to keep reminding herself, too. It was all she could do. Her fingers curled against the countertop, her gaze fixed on the sink instead of looking up at him again. “I just... feel really lonely.”
Whoa. Was that Michael Jordan who just walked by? Holding a glazed chicken wing and drinking lemonade from a tiki glass that looks like a basketball hoop? Is that Diane Keaton, in an oversized Hawaiian shirt and comically large sunglasses, lounging in a chair by the pool? Is Oprah talking to your 10th grade math teacher about the charred cabbage? Yup. This is all happening. Because we’re at Delany’s 100% Hypothetical Fantasy Cookout, where anything is possible. Dreams, reality, and astonishingly tasty food coexist without a hint of skepticism. It’s great to see you. So glad you could make it. Feel free to grab a beer from the kegerator at the top of the water slide.
Okay. The sad reality is that I can’t actually throw a grilling party. The apartment building I live in doesn’t allow grills or open flames on the premises. And even if I mustered up the courage to sneak one onto my balcony, Oprah hasn’t returned my calls in weeks. Something tells me she wouldn’t show. Which is sad, because throwing a party is my second favorite thing to do when it gets all sunny and warm outside. The first is grilling.
But we just released a killer issue filled with some seriously rad grilling recipes, so I’m not letting these real world road blocks get in my way. I’m going to throw this party. Right here. With you. On the internet. Here’s what’s on the menu. Get ready to eat your butts off.
I’ll be serving a drink that can be consumed with or without booze, because there will be both kids (The Yodeling Walmart Boy from Youtube, D.W. from the animated television program Arthur, Andy from Toy Story, etc.) and adults at this cookout. A refreshing, fruity strawberry agua fresca will do the trick. You can head to any of the water fountains, which will start to dispense tequila after 6:00 p.m., to spike your beverage.
There’s a boozy lemonade stand over by the basketball courts. It’s staffed by the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. If want them to serve you a dangerously sip-able cocktail that’s as tart as it is minty, they’ll do that. If you want them to solve mysteries for you, they’ll also do that. That’s hospitality.
Photo by Peden + Munk, food styling by Sue Li, prop styling by Rebecca Bartoshesky
And while we’re at the basketball courts, it looks like Air Bud is here. Or maybe it’s one of Air Bud’s kids? Or grandkids? I don’t know. Golden retrievers all look pretty much the same. Whoever it is seems to be ripping apart a bowl of the grilled corn salad with hot honey-lime dressing. It’s brightly acidic thanks to the lime and a little spicy thanks to sriracha. But creamy chunks of avocado keep those flavors in check. Wait. Can dogs eat avocado? Should I be calling someone?
Photo by Alex Lau, food styling by Rebecca Jurkevich, prop styling by Amy Wilson
Can you hear me over the duet being sung by Patti Smith and Andre 3000? Great. Pass me the pasta salad. Yeah, you heard what I said. I’m serving pasta salad, because even though it’s one of the worst dishes ever invented, I managed to find one that’s actually good. It’s all of the classic Italian flavors you love, turned into a carb-y salad. Tomatoes, basil, peppers, Parmesan, and garlic, topped with crispy breadcrumbs and chopped walnuts. There’s texture happening here, because this pasta salad is tossed in romesco sauce. It’s not a giant pile of slimy salad dressing-soaked noodles.
Where are the tortilla chips? Damnit. Maya Angelou has them on her float in the pool. We need them for this minimalist, charred tomato salsa. You can’t have a cookout without chips and something to dip them in. This salsa is good enough to eat with a spoon though, with a hint of spiciness from a serrano and a gentle smack from lime juice.
Eddie Murphy said these beans were amazing. I don’t know. I haven’t tried them yet, because my sous chef WALL-E (the robot from WALL-E) cooked them. But I do like Eddie Murphy, and he wouldn’t shut up about them. They’re acidic and salty and a little spicy. But most of all, this is a simple preparation for prime-season produce, a celebration of the vegetables at the market, and a perfect side for everyone at the cookout, including Eddie Murphy. Did I mention that Eddie Murphy showed up? Love Eddie Murphy.
Paul Newman threw that horseshoe. He missed the pit by a little. Be cool. Pick it up and hand it back to him. He’s a normal guy. You know what’s not normal though? THE FREAKING SAVORY CARAMEL GLAZE ON THESE GRILLED CHICKEN WINGS. FISH SAUCE AND LEMONGRASS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A reincarnated Paul Newman playing horseshoes is an everyday sight compared to these things. Sweet and sticky and smoky, these wings are standing at the front of the queue to become cookout regulars all summer long. Clean your hands before touching the horseshoes though. No one likes a sticky horseshoe.
Who’s a notable vegetarian? Madonna? No, she couldn’t make it. Erykah Badu? Yes, Erykah is here. And she’s vegetarian. So we need to have a standout vegetarian main. Cookouts aren’t all meat, all the time, folks. That’s why this charred cabbage with goat cheese raita and cucumbers is an absolute winner. The mix of textures (charred, crispy exterior and tender interior) here makes it seem like you’re actually eating a piece of meat. And the acid and herbs in the salad combine with the creaminess of the yogurt to cover the rest of the bases. Speaking of, there are golf carts leaving from the side of the house to take you to the wiffle ball arena. Hurry up.
If you think I’m having a cookout without some red meat, you are mistaken. I floated the idea past Bill Murray when we were conceptualizing the menu, and he laughed in my face. Haven’t seen him since. In hopes that he’ll show up today, I’ll be serving this sticky-sweet grilled pork shoulder, which was developed by a member of the royal barbecue family Aaron Franklin. The flavor on this piece of meat is absolutely bonkers, coated in a glaze that’s equal parts sweet, spicy, and salty. It’s beautiful, and it tastes a hell of a lot like char siu pork when all is said and done. Sliced thin with pickles, it is perfection. Enjoy. And let me know if you see Bill.
SIKE. It’s a fish sandwich. This is a made-up party. I can do this if I want to. And I want to, because this is one of the best fried fish sandwiches I’ve ever had. It’s creamy and tangy, thanks to tartar sauce, and sliced cucumbers lighten the whole thing up to make you feel somewhat healthy. Plus, the fish itself was caught by Captain Quint from Jaws…before he got eaten by the giant shark.
You’d think we’d be having an elaborate, opulent dessert at this event, huh? Something that looks like the thing Rihanna chose to wear, which is cool, but a bit…much. We’re not. We’re going to keep it low-key with a Eton mess, a spoonable dessert made from fresh whipped cream, strawberries, and store-bought meringues.
Eton mess is the dessert that brings this whole thing together, because at the end of the day, a cookout isn’t about extravagance or impressing people. It isn’t about notable celebrity guests, a 126-acre backyard, or a pool big enough to fit your jet skis. A cookout is about making delicious food for people who want to be outside. It’s about relishing the simple joy of breathing fresh air, smelling the coals, and tearing into flavorful food with people you care about. Which is why I invited you. Hope you enjoyed yourself. Party favors are through the arcade. Get home safe.
Want to keep you’re grilling vibe a little healthier? Fine. Here:
Grilled Spiced Snapper with Mango and Red Onion Salad
Grilling a whole fish doesn’t have to be daunting, especially if you use this turning method to minimize the risk of tearing the skin. Lay the fish horizontally across the grill grate with the top fins toward you and cook. When it’s time to turn, wedge two metal spatulas under the fish—one near the tail and the other at the head—then quickly and confidently roll it away from you onto its other side in one fluid motion.
Spicy Grilled Chicken with Crunchy Fennel Salad
This chicken recipe packs some heat, which is why we paired it with a superclean and cooling crisp fennel salad. If fennel is not your thing, any shaved crunchy veg will do. Try radishes, carrots, or cucumbers instead.
Charred Cabbage with Goat Cheese Raita and Cucumbers
For this vegetarian grilling recipe, go hard when charring the cabbage wedges—to the point you might think you did something wrong. They are dense and resilient and need a long time on the grill to soften. Serve this summer side dish with a refreshing raita sauce and crunchy Corn Nuts on top, and prepare to be amazed.
Kamil Bialous
Whole Grilled Salmon with Chanterelles
This recipe is going to instruct you to remove the backbone of the fish from inside the cavity—no small task but well worth it. You can also just tie two whole fillets of salmon together (skin side facing out) if you’d like.
Grilled Citrus-Shrimp Lettuce Cups
This marinade recipe works with any other quick-cooking shellfish or seafood—try scallops or squid. Just be sure to stick to the 30-minute marinade in any case, since going longer can toughen the flesh.
Michael Graydon & Nikole Herriott
Grilled Scallops with Lemony Salsa Verde
Choose scallops that are “dry” (not stored in liquid preservatives). Larger is better; small ones could overcook before browning. Make sure to coat them thoroughly in oil before grilling so they don’t stick to the grate.
Alex Lau
Grilled Eggplant and Lemons with Garlic Labneh
Use whatever type of eggplant looks most appealing at the market; they should be firm to the touch, with glossy skin. Small globe eggplants are easy to find, but this is also a terrific time to use long Asian types, small round white ones, or any of the cool-looking striped varieties.
Grilled Salmon Collars
Don’t fuss with the salmon too much once it’s on the grill: Let the flesh naturally release from the grate before attempting to turn it. You can also use the marinade for any cut of salmon. This recipe is from AL’s Place, which we named our No. 1 new restaurant in America in 2015, in San Francisco, CA.
Grilled Squid with Chile Dressing and Radishes
If you can’t find ají amarillo chiles for this grilled squid recipe, substitute with the paste, which is more widely available. Add 2 tsp. paste to dressing before adding the oil. This recipe is from Oberlin in Providence, RI.
Peden + Munk
Grill-Roasted Pineapple
The smoky and sweet pineapple flesh can be scooped out and added to salsas, spooned over shortcakes or ice cream, or served alongside grilled pork, chicken, or fish. This recipe is from Lord Stanley in San Francisco, CA.
Michael Graydon + Nikole Herriott
Grilled Fennel
Make sure to peel away the outermost layer from the fennel bulb; it’s tough and fibrous and won’t be good grilled. This recipe is from P.Y.T. in Los Angeles, CA.
Peden + Munk
Peden + Munk
Spice-Marinated and Grilled Lamb Chops
You don’t need a roaring-hot grill for this lamb chops recipe. Grilling them over moderate heat will allow some of the fat to soften and render. This recipe is from Gunpowder, an Indian restaurant in London.
Alex Lau
Grilled Halibut with Tomatoes and Hearts of Palm
Cooking fish doesn’t need to be intimidating. In fact, few things could be simpler—or more rewarding. For meaty steaks of swordfish, albacore, and halibut, all you need is a kiss of high heat from a grill or cast-iron pan and a simple vinaigrette. Zesting citrus directly onto your food means no wasted precious aromatic oils and zero chance of the zest drying out before you use it.
Peden & Munk
Vincent Cross
Grilled Hanger Steak with Fennel Salad
51 Lincoln grills the tomatoes for this salad, but unless you have a screaming-hot grill, this can be tricky. Either way, use beefsteaks, which have an excellent ratio of flesh to seeds.
Be the Star You Are!® Summer Star Express
July 2017 Newsletter for BTSYA
Miracle Moment®
In less time than it takes to tell what a tough day you've had, you could be relaxing already.
~Source unknown
A Message From Our Founder, Cynthia Brian
Summertime and the living is easy or perhaps easier, at least that’s what the songs tell us. Kids are out of school, families enjoy vacations, barbecues, concerts, and cookouts. Interestingly for many of the volunteers of Be the Star You Are!®, we are busier than usual reading books, writing reviews, planning radio broadcasts, and working on new book projects. Since spring, eleven new teen book reviewers have joined our STAR Book Review Team and our Book Review Coordinator, Maria Wong is posting new reviews daily. Read reviews at http://www.btsya.com/book_reviews.html. Chelsea Pelchat, our Teen Event Coordinator planned a pop-up orchestra recital on Saturday, July 15th at 2:30pm at Aegis Living in Moraga, California with our musician volunteers. More info at http://www.bethestaryouare.org/events .Elizabeth Aquilar, our Newsletter Director, continues to assemble this monthly circular in between her exciting travels. Read about her latest adventure here.
I am busy proofing the final publishers copy of my new book, Growing with the Goddess Gardener, with pre-orders available now at http://www.cynthiabrian.com/books. 25% of the proceeds from the book will benefit BTSYA. Our most exciting news is our work on the third book in the Be the Star You Are!® series, Be the Star You Are!® for Millennials, with extraordinarily poignant chapters from 30+ BTSYA volunteers, supporters, and radio personalities. 100% of all proceeds will be directly donated to BTSYA to continue our uplifting, life-enhancing literacy and positive media message programs. This is a gift of love is keeping me very occupied with writing, editing, proofing, and communicating with our talented contributors. In 2018 we will base the themes of our weekly radio broadcasts on StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!® and Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio to a specific chapter in the book, inviting authors and experts with complementary ideas. It is going to be a spectacular season and the book is going to be a fabulous read.
We will again have a booth at the Pear and Wine Festival in September and are seeking sponsors. Thinking ahead to our 20th anniversary in 2019, we are in search of a talented event coordinator to help us celebrate. If that person is you, please email me at [email protected].
Enjoy summer. Stay cool! (And I have a few easy tips for you to do just that listed below!)Swim, play, spend time with family and friends, and take it a bit easier. You deserve a break and if you can’t have a week long holiday, try Karen Kitchel’s 6 Minute Vacation below.
Whatever you do, make time to make a difference in the life of someone else. Everyone counts.
With gratitude and joy for your support,
TIPS ON STAYING COOL THIS SUMMER
1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine when it’s hot as they cause dehydration.
2. Use sunscreen every day and reapply as directed.
3. Wear a hat and cotton clothing.
4. Avoid sports and high-energy activities when it’s really hot, especially mid day.
5. Take a dip in the pool, wade in a river, swim in a lake, play in the sea, or just take a cool shower.
6. Relax in the shade. A cold cloth around your neck helps.
7. Keep ceiling fans on, close draperies and window treatments during the heat of the day. Open windows for cross ventilation when the temperatures are lower at night.
8. Make sure your pets have plenty of water.
Enjoy this wonderful season of the year when you can be outside in nature.
6 MINUTE VACATIONS
By Karen Kitchel
Summer disappears so quickly that we all need to pack in as much vacation time as possible. While trips to faraway places are nice, our bodies and souls can use fun breaks far more often than we can pack a suitcase.
Consider taking a six-minute vacation every day this summer. Begin by making a list of the little things you enjoy doing like eating an ice cream cone, picking some wildflowers, listening to your two favorite songs, looking at vacation photos from years ago, or closing your eyes and imagining you are in Bora Bora enchanted by the turquoise water. Then take that list and schedule six minute vacations on your calendar for every day that's left of summer.
You just might find these six minutes every day are your favorite part of summer.
Karen Kitchel is passionate about helping those in need. As President of the Cheerful Givers nonprofit organization, she helped to bring birthday gifts to more than one million less fortunate children. Prior to that, she created a corporate university at BI Worldwide. Currently she serves meals to the homeless, is a job coach, teacher, writer and mentor. She can be reached at [email protected].
Somewhat Sleepless in SeattleAn Update from Liz Aguilar Leaving home again to start up research wasn't easy after having a month of vacation at home. While I loved the idea of traveling again, I had gotten quite comfortable enjoying home, family, and friends. But the longer I explore Seattle, the more I love it more each day. I'm extremely grateful and lucky to have already made wonderful friends and to have supportive mentors working with me in lab on my research. For those of you who may not know me as well, I'm majoring in biochemistry and minoring in computer science with the hopes of someday pursuing graduate school to study computational biology. With my work, I'd love to be able to help make advances in medicine by understanding the underlying cause of genetic diseases. The University of Washington in Seattle has so far provided me with a wonderful environment to personally grow and learn from other peers who are also motivated to make a difference through their work. While research has been enjoyable, exploring the city has given me a greater appreciation for the culture and the beautiful pacific northwest. Last weekend, I went on a seven mile hike with several friends in the Bandera Mountains, which are just an hour away from the city. While the hike was long and challenging, the gorgeous views and sights were absolutely stunning. It truly reminded me of when I was back in Switzerland! I hope to continue making these memorable experiences and I hope to also share them with you. I hope you are all doing well and that you also manage to take time for yourself to enjoy this wonderful summer! p.s - Seattle hasn't had a drop of rain since late May!
I currently have a 4 rack Bradley smoker, a 6 rack Bradley smoker (both have upgrades to the heating elements), an Ugly Drum Smoker (self built) an Oklahoma Joe’s offset smoker, A Weber Kettle Grill, A Z-Grills pellet smoker, and a Gas Grill. My website is PullMyPorkBBQ.com and I try to have all my recipes there and soon will also have merch on the website.
